homebrewbeer Alcohol content of beer...?

1. What determines the alcohol content of beer (during the brewing process).

2. How is the alcohol content of beer measured (how it is physically done)? In other words, is it estimated based on the process used, or is there some sort of equipment used, or what?

Thanks in advance. Normally I would research this kind of stuff myself, but I’ve found there are very helpful people here who may know off-hand. I’m also not looking for the most in-depth answer, just a simple explanation, if possible. Thanks again!

Beer ranges from 4% to 7%.

1. Alcohol is produced by yeast, thus the more food (sugar) the more alcohol is produced.

2. Usually measured indirctly via a hydrometer.
The hydrometer gives you the density (specific gravity) remaining in the liquid. By measuring your starting (before fermentation) value and ending (after fermentation) value, you can figure out alcohol content. The assumption is that the sugar converts to alcohol thus changed the density of the liquid. This change give the approximate alcohol content.

These website has a more complete explanation:

Sugar content and type of yeast determine how much alcohol is produced. More sugar, more alcohol. Some yeasts die at a higher alcohol content than others.

Alcohol content is usually determined by specific gravity.

Beer is from 3.2 to 7 percent. When alcohol get higher then 7 yeast dies. Hydrometer reading taken before and after brew. Difference is alcohol.

clarence is gay by the way.

Alcohol during brewing is determined by the amount of grain (starch converts to sugar) or sugar adjuncts in the recipe.
The content is measured by using a hydrometer to first measure the sugar content before fermentation (original gravity) and again after fermentation (terminal or finishing gravity). the difference is calculated thusly to give the alcohol content:
Original Gravity minus Terminal gravity divide by .00738
There are lots of Brewing Calculators available on the internet:

I suggest you do a lot of reading before endeavoring to brew your first batch. It will bring you a better quality beer and actually save time as well.

Happy brewing
